If you are fitting a staff floor, start on office desks. If you need two work zones in a corner, use corner desks. If the top has to rise and fall on a motor, use electric standing desks.

What a computer desk actually needs

• Depth — enough room for a keyboard and a screen that is not in your face. Shallow “laptop shelves” look tidy and feel cramped by lunchtime.
• Cable path — a hole, scallop or under-shelf route so the power pack is not hanging off the back.
• Stability — trolleys need decent castors and a frame that does not wobble when you type.
• Height — sitting trolleys should meet a dining chair or task chair; standing trolleys should let your elbows sit near 90 degrees.
• Footprint — if the room is a bedroom corner or a bay window, measure the floor first. A 1200 table is often plenty.

Pick the smallest thing that holds the gear you actually use. A commercial 1800 desk is wasted on a laptop and a mouse.

Is a computer desk different from an office desk?

In practice, many “computer desks” are just smaller office desks. On this site the split is useful: this page is compact tables and trolleys. Wider commercial desks are on office desks.

Will a laptop trolley replace a desk?

For a few hours, yes. For a full workday with a screen and keyboard, a fixed desk or a sit-stand desk is more stable and gives you more depth.

What size computer desk do I need at home?

A 1200mm top covers a laptop or one monitor in most spare rooms. Measure the wall and leave room to pull a chair out. See home office desks for the home-focused desks.

Do these trolleys take a desktop PC?

The OTM computer trolleys are built for that. The small laptop trolleys are not. Check the shelf size and weight on the product page.

Can I stand at these desks?
